my love
you have cast the counter to all my spells
and rendered my magic meaningless
you have struck
at the root of my power
the very essence
of my spark of intention
you have questioned
the validity of my valor
called into question my quest
it is as though you found a joke unfunny
and ridiculed it at a level of riotous hilarity
that my original premise
could scarcely recognize
as even possible
you have trounced me, my love
it is as if I were a mouse armed with a cotton swab
come to battle the great tigress of the plains
I am an insect come to compete with a dragon
a beetles armor vs the flames of hell
tiny mandibles vs scales of iron and steel
I am a fool to believe
I could bring thoughts of beauty
to a face and mind such as are yours?
It’s like trying to sell a shell to a turtle
fins to the fish, arms to an octopus
legs to a spider, wings to an eagle
and so you have seen
that I have come
not truly with gifts
but pondering thoughts of plunder
Not to give, but to take
To bask in your sunshine
to be drenched in your rain
to be baked by the rays you radiate
Who can admit this to you, but me?
To acknowledge your beauty
is to be devoured by its power
to be consumed by a delicious morsel
to be imbibed by wine,
drunk like the drink
of those who lust for escape
and so I am submerged
in your endless well,
your eternal wealth
powerless to entice you
I have no advice for you
Please be merciful
I have been caught as a thief
sneaking to snatch your heart
in a smoky cloud
of poetry
and prose
just a little too awestruck
by my prize
to hide
and so you have called me out
and yet
I feel no shame
in your gaze
